Numen- Italian Witchcraft
What is a Numen? Its more than just a fat guy on Seinfeld ! According to the Italian Witches ( the Strega) a NUMEN is the 'presence' that occupies any place or thing. It is the spirit or the life force that gives places, rocks, plants etc the power they have. Numen is a latin word meaning 'in presence' or 'inner presence' The Strega call upon and utilise the power of the Numen in all acts of Witchcraft and Spellcraft. A strong, healthy Numen provides valuable magical assistance and is treated with much reverance and respect. Plants may be grown especially to work as a familiar to the witch- in this case it would be the Numen that she would be working with. Wiccan Author RAVEN GRIMASSI has written many books on the old Italian Witchcraft Traditions that include many differing aspects of the NUMEN. |
