Cool Treats for Dogs
A couple of great ideas for your loved up Mutt ! Here in Australia we have particularly hot summers. This can be a challenge for everyone, including our four legged friends who also need to cool down and stay hydrated. This is a couple of my own recipes for cooling summer snacks for your Best Friend. DogBlocks.
( adjust amounts according to the size of your hound)
Quarter fill a plastic cup with your pooch's favourite dry food/biscuits.
Add a teaspoon of honey or maple syrup, and then top up the cup with fresh water and place in the freezer until solid.
When frozen, remove from plastic/paper cup and give to your pooch as a special treat. Not only is it YUMMY ( to dogs !)but it is nutritionally satisfying, cooling and hydrating but it also provides some fun for the pooch as he/she tried to get to the biscuits.
IMPORTANT- take the amount of biscuits in the DogBlock into consideration as part of the daily food allowance to avoid overfeeding. Alternatives- I have used the following in place of dried biscuits with great success.
* left over cooked meat diced into small cubes ( this is ideal for the little guys)
* small pieces of raw chicken - eg- chicken necks are great
*minced raw meat or cooked meat. For the bigger hounds ( i have a labrador and a mini poodle), i have found that a large marrow bone or lamb shank frozen into water in an icecream container, can be enjoyable and provide hours of fun. ( dont forget to take it out of the container or Pooch will shred plastic everywhere !) Hope this is of some use to you and your pampered pets. |
